Births

Ellen Uttley was the third child of Jonathan Uttley and Matilda Linder. She was born on 27 March 1867, according to the 1901 Census, in Elmira. She is included in the census of 1871 (age 4), 1881 (age 14), 1891 (age 23) and 1901 (age 34), living at the family home and then with her mother Matilda after her father Jonathan died in 1895.

Thomas Henry Hall was born in Mornington Township in January 1861, a son of Thomas Hall and Elizabeth Smithson. Thomas was a farmer in Mornington when he married Katie Viola S. Brownlee on September 16, 1903 in Wellesley. They had a daughter, Vera, the following year and a son, Clarence, in 1905. Katie died on December 15, 1905 shortly after Clarence's birth which left Thomas as a widower with two very young children.

The event was marked by several short items in the local papers:

The Chronicle-Telegraph, Waterloo April 16, 1908, page 4 On Tuesday, April 7th the Presbyterian Ladies Aid gave a supper in honor of Miss Uttley prior to her departure from Elmira. Miss Uttley was presented with a pretty jardiniere and stand.

The Chronicle-Telegraph, Waterloo April 23, 1908, Elmira Personals on page 4 Mr. and Mrs. John Linder, of Toronto, attended the wedding of Miss Ellen Uttley on Thursday.

Many years later on July 21, 1938, page 2, The Elmira Signet repeated this item from 1908. Such local interest items, and there were always many of them, are a great source of information about people's comings and goings.
30 Years Ago -- 1908

    Mr. and Mrs. Menno Wilfong were visiting at Millbank Sunday. Mrs. Wilfong will spend a short time there with her sister, Mrs. Hall.

The 1911 Canadian census shows the family living in Elmira and Thomas working as an "implement agent". In about 1918 they moved to the United States, first to Vermont and then to New York state.

Death

The passing of Ellen was reported in the K-W Record on Thursday November 24, 1933 (page 2) and in the Elmira Signet of Thursday November 30, 1933 (page Two) with the same obituary. The Elmira Signet read:

OBITUARY

Mrs. Thomas H. Hall

    Word of the death of Mrs. Thomas H. Hall at her home in Salem, N.Y., was received by relatives in Elmira last Thursday. Mrs. Hall, who was in her 67th year, was born in Elmira, being the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Uttley. About twenty-five years ago she was married to Thomas Hall of Millbank. They resided in Elmira until fifteen years ago when they moved to Vermont, later moving to Salem, N.Y., where the death occurred after an illness of a couple of weeks.
    Surviving are her husband, a stepson and stepdaughter and one sister, Mrs. Menno Wilfong of Elmira. The funeral was held in Salem on Saturday.
